The Most Stable Gigabit Router: Reviews ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router

I'm not a techie guy so I'm not going to echo what all the computer geniuses have written. Mainly because I just don't understand it. While I know my way around computers, my eyes glazed over when I reviewed the details of this ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band router and reviewed its capabilities. I just want something that works when you plug it in yet it seemed the days of "plug 'n play" were over.

Not that fashion in computer hardware is high on my list of "must haves" but this ASUS RT-N66U router does look very nice. The texturing on the flat face and general material quality and fit and finish is top notch - you definitely feel value in the build quality.

To explain our setup for someone in a similar situation, my home office could double as a large closet. We live in a late 1800's era home where the walls may as well be constructed out of Kryptonite. The modem/router combination given to us by Time Warner Cable could barely send a signal to the upstairs.

Any downstairs use was fine but the only room upstairs that could get a strong enough signal was in the room directly above the office. As well, we dealt with constant drop-offs and disconnects due to the weak signal.

  • 4 x LAN ports for 10/100/1000 BaseT

We bought this ASUS RT-N66U in conjunction with the Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS modem and it's been a dream. Our internet is faster even though we didn't change plans and we have yet to have any dropped connections or resets.

The signal strength is superb as every little blip dealio on the signal strength meters is full. We have identical strength downstairs and upstairs, even in the way back corner of the home. As well, we can use our cell phone's WiFi capability half a block from the home, whereas before we had to be within 20 feet of the router.

ASUS RT-N66U setup was a breeze. I simply followed the instructions, which were few, and everything just magically started to work. It was surreal. Something that works as advertised. I contemplated quite a bit between this and a cheaper alternative but the $70 additional I paid for this was the best money ever spent.

In this home we have three Roku HD's, two xBoxes, PC gaming, streaming, and cell phones all cranking out activity (sometimes all at once) and this hasn't had a hiccup yet. It's been quite nice not running into the office to reset the router twice daily. This ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router is a workhorse.
